The Phoenix Phenomenon

“You’re only a victim as long as you allow yourself to be.......”

Featured in BBC 40 Minutes, The Sunday Times and many other newspapers, magazines and TV programmes, this is a topic very close to Alexandra’s heart. Following her own experience she believes that someone who suffers violence can resurrect their life - like the Phoenix. In a world where violence effects so many of us - of all ages and backgrounds - Alexandra puts forward the positive side.

Having been stalked and beaten up herself, she says: “........ It was horrible, but the men who beat me up changed my life. I was determined not to let them win, so I pushed myself harder, worked with more focus, kept them in my sights like a fighter would a boxing partner.......”

Alexandra can be very forthright on the subject: “....... We hear so much about violence, how it ruins lives, how it makes everyone a victim. I understand that not everyone can overcome their experiences, but many can. We should show examples of triumph after trauma - otherwise, what message are we sending our children? And the children who follow?

Merisi

In time Alexandra hopes to run a summer school - Merisi - for children gifted in the arts. It would be a place where kids could spend 3 - 4 weeks surrounded by paintings, sculpture and literature. It would give a chance for children who feel alienated from their peers - Alexandra remembers the feeling only too well - to enjoy themselves in an encouraging environment which lets them create.

Hopefully Merisi would be a springboard for the next generation of artists and writers.
